When No “Good” is Visible

We know that is hard to keep a focus when all around us is spinning out of control.  So today’s post is for those who have nothing good to report.  Those who are surrounded by a darkness that is threatening and forboding.  This is for the ones who have received bad reports and the next wave of news threatens to be worst than the first.  These words are for those carrying a heavy load, who feel like they can’t handle one more thing.  For those whose kids are losing their minds, living a life so far outside of the teachings they…

Fight to See

Ephesians 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people Eyes open. There are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally. 68% are trapped in forced labor. 26% are children. 55% are women and girls. With our eyes on the news and the statistics and the headlines, the issue feels gargantuan, extreme, and impossible.  In the face of the facts, it is easy to lose hope. We must fight to keep our eyes…

Books for Quitters and Winners

If you are anything like me you start reading a book and then put it down and never pick it back up.  Well this year was a little different for me!  Here is my list of books that didn’t let me quit, that didn’t  let my schedule get in the way.  These books grabbed me by the collar and arrested my interests, thoughts and emotions.  These books made a finisher out of this quitter!  Maybe they will be a win for your too!  You can click on any pictures or the links to learn more about any of the books….

Is Your Opinion Your god?

Just another day scrolling through Facebook, when I see a post that arrests me. I literally scrolled up and then back down in an attempt to make what I saw disappear or reappear with someone else’s name attached. How could it be that people I’ve known, sat with, worshipped with, prayed with could post such cruelty and ridiculously racist rhetoric. It used to happen every once in a while, and I would attempt some inbox dialogue or pray that other leaders or pastors would be so alarmed that love would lead them to seek a conversation. The comments or posts…

Three Steps to Maintaining Emotional Safety

I have a family member that struggles with drug addiction.  I want to start off by saying that she is a member of my family and I love her.  Many times in my interactions with her, I have to remember that the drugs are in the forefront – speaking, manipulating, coniving, plotting.  The sickness is leading most of the time.  There are times of clarity and sobriety that I enjoy with her.  I want to be filled with grace and hope when interacting with her, but I also want to use wisdom and operate in clarity to keep my…

Imagine Having Great Friends.

Imagine the best friend you could possibly think of – and then become that friend for someone else. Imagine the circle of friends you deeply desire – then begin the process of healing from the broken friendships that went sour. Imagine life with women who admitted their own imperfections, and extended grace for the imperfect people around them. Imagine being a woman who actually can actually trust again, and begin the process of tearing down the walls that keep potential friends on the acquaintance side of the fence. Imagine being whole, and embracing the fact that life after hurt starts…

Common Core Aging

Working on a common core math problem with my son, led me to a striking realization.  If I rounded to the nearest ten, my age was now closer to the higher number than the lower number.  With all the enthusiasm an eight year old could manage to gather my son yelled out, “If the number is HIGHER than five we must round UP!”  “I know. I know,” I reasurred him.  He was unaware that I was having an internal mommy moment. Rounding up proved to be a sad reality for me that time was moving fast.  Though I had frozen…

GIRL, YOU NEED TO LIGHTEN UP!

Five Ways to Know You Need to Lighten up We are all juggling stuff –   husbands, doctor appointments, kids, church, obligations, working, not working, housework, schoolwork, projects, personal improvement – and the list goes on!  Many of the appointments on our agenda are mandatory, obligatory, heavy and downright hard.  That load can WEIGH US DOWN!  Girl!  Here are some signs that it’s time to lighten up. 1.  When you run into people and they ask you if you are okay (with that look of deep concern on their faces)?   This means you look like hell has broken loose…

5 Real Reasons You Don’t Have Friends (and how to make new ones)

I was really content with my small circle of friends.  I had a crew to shop with, eat with, vent to, and do our Christian version of partying.  I mean those women totally understood me.  They didn’t judge me.  They encouraged and inspired me.  MY CREW!  Then things went a little haywire with one moving to another city, but she was still within a couple of hours.  Then the other was swept off her feet by a soldier in shining armor and whisked away to Alaska.  Then one passed away.  So I went from chilling with my girls to all…

My Name Is…

I remember the hot day blurred by the excitement of my 8th grade graduation. Many of us girls attempted our first go round in wearing high heels that were not our mothers’ that day. It was the kind of humid that morphs my hair from curls to a gentle afro. Smooth! As we celebrated in true middle school fashion none of us stayed in one place too long. I felt like everyone was calling my name. I had to rush from one spot to another to make sure I was in as many pictures as possible. After posing for a…
