Books for Quitters and Winners

If you are anything like me you start reading a book and then put it down and never pick it back up.  Well this year was a little different for me!  Here is my list of books that didn’t let me quit, that didn’t  let my schedule get in the way.  These books grabbed me by the collar and arrested my interests, thoughts and emotions.  These books made a finisher out of this quitter!  Maybe they will be a win for your too!  You can click on any pictures or the links to learn more about any of the books….

Is Your Opinion Your god?

Just another day scrolling through Facebook, when I see a post that arrests me. I literally scrolled up and then back down in an attempt to make what I saw disappear or reappear with someone else’s name attached. How could it be that people I’ve known, sat with, worshipped with, prayed with could post such cruelty and ridiculously racist rhetoric. It used to happen every once in a while, and I would attempt some inbox dialogue or pray that other leaders or pastors would be so alarmed that love would lead them to seek a conversation. The comments or posts…

Three Steps to Maintaining Emotional Safety

I have a family member that struggles with drug addiction.  I want to start off by saying that she is a member of my family and I love her.  Many times in my interactions with her, I have to remember that the drugs are in the forefront – speaking, manipulating, coniving, plotting.  The sickness is leading most of the time.  There are times of clarity and sobriety that I enjoy with her.  I want to be filled with grace and hope when interacting with her, but I also want to use wisdom and operate in clarity to keep my…

Common Core Aging

Working on a common core math problem with my son, led me to a striking realization.  If I rounded to the nearest ten, my age was now closer to the higher number than the lower number.  With all the enthusiasm an eight year old could manage to gather my son yelled out, “If the number is HIGHER than five we must round UP!”  “I know. I know,” I reasurred him.  He was unaware that I was having an internal mommy moment. Rounding up proved to be a sad reality for me that time was moving fast.  Though I had frozen…

GIRL, YOU NEED TO LIGHTEN UP!

Five Ways to Know You Need to Lighten up We are all juggling stuff –   husbands, doctor appointments, kids, church, obligations, working, not working, housework, schoolwork, projects, personal improvement – and the list goes on!  Many of the appointments on our agenda are mandatory, obligatory, heavy and downright hard.  That load can WEIGH US DOWN!  Girl!  Here are some signs that it’s time to lighten up. 1.  When you run into people and they ask you if you are okay (with that look of deep concern on their faces)?   This means you look like hell has broken loose…

Love is Patient

God is slowing me down to appreciate His word in small bites.  Today’s snack – “Love is patient.” Walk with me slowly through this meditation.   When I became a wife, I kind of thought that I would need a couple of months – maybe a year to “get it right.”  I thought that the learning curve would be like learning to ride a bike:  you fail – you learn – you never forget.  Love is patient – for  a reason. When I married my husband I pledged my love for as long as I live.  Why is marriage forever?…

Sexual Healing

When did you know you needed it?  Was it after the rape or possibly the second you saw that first naked image, was it when trust was broken and shame was carried. Was it after he snapped the pic and you didn’t have proof but you felt like your body had been shared? Was it the inappropriate touch at a sleepover or a friend who became an intimate foe? Was it the abortion?  Was it the guilt of admitting there had been too many partners to remember them all or even worse the fleeting thought that some may not even…

The Kirk/Kanye Controversy

Scrolling through Facebook I saw a picture of Kirk Franklin and Kanye West. Kirk Franklin posted the picture in an effort to calm the firestorm ensuing as his fans react to the news that Franklin will be featured on Kanye West’s new album, The Life of Pablo.  The  single, “Ultralight Beams” not only features Kirk Franklin, but a Gospel choir, Kelly Price and a few other celebs.   Check out the post here:  Kirk’s post “Kanye is not me. I am not him. He is my brother I am proud to do life with. No sprints, but Marathons;…

The King You Really Want!

Samuel had been the leader of Israel.  The people noticed two things – 1. He was getting old and 2. His sons were not fit to take his place as a judge.  They then asked him for a king, so we can be like other nations.  This grieved God’s heart.  They asked for a king, as if they didn’t have one.  Samuel was displeased by their actions, but God reminded him, “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.” 1 Samuel 8:7 Rejecting…

Why Can’t I Pray Away Depression?

14.8 million American adults suffer from depression.  These are just the ones that report it, so just imagine the number of those who are struggling in silence.   It is the leading cause of disability in the United States.  Research says that depression is more prevalent in women than men, but my suspicion is that women are more willing to admit it than men.   Here is what I do know – if you are struggling YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I have struggled with depression in the past and there are times when I will have an episode.  I hate…
