Four Symptoms of a Heart Problem (Part 1)

HEART (4)Warning signs can save your life.  Many of us keep pushing along and ignore God’s warning signs that there is a problem.  We look at the outward situations – relationships, finances, failures, disappointments – but many times those are just surface issues to point back to the root of the problem – our hearts.  Here are four symptoms that point to some serious heart problems in need of attention right away.  To some they may sound crazy, to others they may sound very familiar, but we all can agree these symptoms are dangerous.

Symptom #1 – You think God is punishing you.

Do you think that God is trying to get you back?   Do you think the  disappointments and heartbreaks you have suffered are God’s way of letting you know that He is mad at you?  You think that you deserve the terrible things that are coming your way, and that you are just getting paid back for your own bad choices.  This is simply NOT TRUE!  2 Samuel 22:27 says, “To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.”  This verse lets us know that the way we see God is based on our hearts.  When you are walking closely with Him, you will see that His grace is available to you.  His desire is not to punish you, but to free you from punishment.  There is a heart problem, but there is also a solution.

Symptom #2 – Why me?

Do you find yourself asking God, “Why are you doing this to me!”  Do you feel like a victim of God’s will?  Have you felt let down or disappointed by God’s decision making?  Do you find yourself suggesting to Him what He could have or should have done?  When Lazarus died his sister said to Jesus, “‘Lord,’…“If you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”  Can you hear her heart?  She is questioning Jesus’ decisions.  She is examining the motives of His heart instead of bearing the contents of hers.  Through the situation she found the truth of the Resurrection!  Through your situation He wants to show you the same thing.  So instead of  why start asking what.  What would you like to show me?  How do you want me to respond?  When your heart is pure you can see and trust God’s hand in the situation.  Matthew 5:8 says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”  If you can’t see Him – there some blockage in your heart.

There are two more symptoms that I will share with you tomorrow.  Then I will share the solutions from God’s Word to remedy any damage caused by these heart problems!
