What Are You Looking For?
By Anthony Fritzgerald
My wife and I had a chance to take a short vacation to Las Vegas. We had never gone before and thought that it would be a great opportunity for us to connect and just hang out. Las Vegas is one of the most popular vacation destinations in America and it has a reputation that it works very hard to fulfill – SIN CITY. We saw people from all walks of life seeking something to fill that chasm of emptiness. There are so many broken people out there that have tricked themselves in believing that sinful things will lead them to happiness, fulfillment and joy.
You cannot search emptiness in hopes of finding something. But the enemy sure would like you to try! So you cannot hope to find abundant life in a world of sin. We were in a place that is nicknamed “sin city” surrounded with people who were ready to indulge in anything that was available. For temporary pleasure they risk eternal joy. Not just in Vegas, but everywhere.
John 10:10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
People are searching everywhere. We are looking for life in all the dead places. We don’t realize that God has everything that we need and all we have to do is to turn to Him. The emptiness and brokenness that we all struggle with cannot be fulfilled with the things of the world. In the end will only lead them down a path of just more emptiness and brokenness.
Psalms 16:8-11I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful[b] one see decay.11 You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand
The emptiness and brokenness that we all experience can only be filled with the joy of the Lord. The loneliness is annihilated because we have a friend in Jesus. It doesn’t matter how hard you try you will never find anyone or anything that is better than Jesus.
Luke 8 tells a story about a woman who was subject to bleeding for 12 years and no one could heal her, so after trying everything else she went to Jesus and thought that if she could just touch even the smallest part of him then she would be healed. Jesus doesn’t want us to only seek out the smallest part of Him. He gave us everything on the cross and He wants us to have all of Him and in that we should give Him all of us.
So what are you looking for? Where are you looking? For fulfillment, for joy, for life more abundantly look to Christ. He came just for YOU!
